Bio

I am the Publisher of Tyrus Books, a division of F+W Media known for its crime and dark literary fiction. Before that, I was also the founder and Publisher of Bleak House Books. Wisconsin born and bred. Live in Madison. Went to school in Milwaukee (UWM English & Philosophy major).

I listen to a lot of music from anywhere and everywhere I can get it. Punk. Hip-hop. Metal. Gospel. Country. Indie. Jazz. Ambient. Fado. Obscure folk music from small towns in nowhere. Some of the musicians I’m digging right now while I’m writing this include: Propagandhi, Joanna Newsom, Ms. Fridrich, Jawbreaker, American Football, Ras Kass, Miles Davis, Smoking Popes, and Mariza.

Not including the things I’ve published, here are some of the books I’ve revisited a bunch: Deer Hunting with Jesus by Joe Bageant, Franny & Zooey by J.D. Salinger, To Kill a Mockingbird by Harper Lee, and Shot in the Heart by Mikal Gilmore.

The history of baseball has fascinated me for a long time, especially what it meant to the fabric of this country in the early 20th century. I’ve thrown my allegiance to the most doomed sports franchise in the world, the Chicago Cubs. Tyrus Books was named after my favorite baseball player of all time – Ty Cobb. By all accounts, Cobb was not a good guy, but he was a helluva competitor with an incredibly haunting life story (his mother killed his father).

I believe in traveling to every corner of the world to get stories from locals. Some of the most valuable lessons I’ve learned were in places like the swamps of northern Florida or the coal country of West Virginia.

I’ve met the President.

I’m a near 200 average bowler.

Before settling into a career in publishing, I held the following jobs–newspaper delivery boy, carpet installer, warehouse worker (electronics store), warehouse worker (natural foods warehouse), warehouse worker (print shop), and delivery driver.

Adventure ’til Death

I am a believer in the ability of people to bond. Whether it is music, baseball, or something else entirely, I know we can do better than we're doing.
